Things to do near Pottsville for the active and adventurous traveller

Well done! You have booked your Pottsville Beach holiday. Now, you are searching for activities to keep you busy as you don’t like sitting around but prefer to be active and explore the area. Good on ya! Fortunately, Pottsville Beach is halfway between the Gold Coast and Byron Bay, so you are in luck – there are heaps of things near Pottsville that will satisfy your adventurous spirit.


Let’s get started, shall we!


1. On Water:

  • Surfing – when the waves call, you must answer! There a various surfing spots worth exploring to get your break on:

· Black Rocks at Pottsville Beach

· The Point at Cabarita Beach

· Fingal Heads

· The Pass and Wategos Beach at Byron Bay

· Hastings Point Beach

Kingscliff Beach



  • Stand-up Paddle Boarding – if SUP is more your thing, then the waters off Pottsville Beach, Cabarita Beach, Kingscliff Beach are all ideal for this. Calm waters make for fun SUP. Mongo Boards is a local business and they will take care of you. https://mongoboards.com/


  • Kayaking – keen on gliding through mangroves, and spying for bird habitats? Watersports Guru based in Kingscliff has various kayaking tours to suit your needs. https://watersportsguru.com/kayaking/


2. On Land:

  • Northern Rivers Rail Trail - the 24km Tweed section of the rail trail was officially opened in March 2023 to enthusiastic cheers from the local community, and walkers, bikers, nature lovers alike! This is one you won't want to pass up!

Travel Time from Pottsville: less than 15min


  • Hot Air Ballooning – if your adventuresome spirit cannot pass up a chance to head up into the sky to view that spectacular sunrise up close, fortunately, Byron Bay Ballooning may just be the ticket to get you there. Tours take you over the Byron Bay Hinterland.

  • Tandem Hang Gliding – nothing beats flying up high in the air and watching ocean life, such was whales, dolphins, sea turtles, etc. frolic about below. Flying tandem from the Cape Byron Nature Reserve and also at Lennox Head with Byron Bay and Lennox Head Hang Gliding School will surely allow you to do that.

  • Bushwalking – get knee deep into nature and be marvelled at these beautiful sub-tropical rainforests that are found in various National Parks in the Far North Coast of NSW:


1. Mebbin National Park:

Byrrill Creek Walking Track - Distance: 1km return

Travel Time from Pottsville: 1 hour



2. Border Ranges National Park:

Falcorostrum Loop Walking Track - Distance: 0.65km loop

Travel Time from Pottsville: 2 hours



3. World Heritage-listed Wollumbin National Park:

Lyrebird Walking Track – Distance: 0.6km return

Travel Time from Pottsville: 45 min



4. Whian Whian State Conservation Area:

Historic Nightcap Walking Track - Distance: 18km one-way

Travel Time from Pottsville: 1 hour



5. Nightcap National Park:

Minyon Falls Walking Track – Distance: 13km return

Travel Time from Pottsville: 1 hour 30 min
